Africa-Press – Cape verde. China’s new ambassador on Friday called on Cape Verde to join the initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Global Governance Initiative, to help the world, “which is in danger.”
Zhang Yang, who made these remarks to the press on the sidelines of the ceremony to hand over credentials to President José Maria Neves, said he received the head of state’s assurance of his “unwavering support for the one-China principle.”
According to him, José Maria Neves’s stance demonstrates “the high level of mutual and political trust” between the two countries.
Beijing’s new representative in Praia also stated that he had a “very friendly and heart-to-heart” conversation with the president.
He added that the diplomatic relations developed between the two countries over the 49 years since their establishment are “very strong.”
He recalled that last year, at the Beijing Conference between China and Africa, bilateral relations between the two countries were “elevated to the level of a strategic partnership.”
“We also urge China and Cape Verde to jointly uphold the United Nations-centered international system and the international order based on international law, so that we can implement true multilateralism,” said the Chinese ambassador.
Next year, China and Cape Verde will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states.
China has been instrumental in the construction of several infrastructure projects in Cape Verde, such as Cape Verde’s first dam (Poilão) in the interior of Santiago, the new University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) Campus, and the National Stadium.
In the healthcare sector, Chinese medical teams have been working in the archipelago since 1984, providing medical support and training local healthcare professionals.
China has also supported initiatives focused on internal security and the development of the blue economy. In the field of education, it has offered scholarships to Cape Verdean students.
