Africa-Press – Cape verde. The men’s team from Sporting de Portugal (B) and the women’s team from ABC da Praia won the II Edition of the International Handball Tournament “Tarrafal Cup 2023” in the final held this Sunday at the Tarrafal pavilion.
Sporting B beat its Portuguese counterpart Benfica (B), winner of the 1st edition of the competition, by 30-21, and ABC da Praia, won the women’s competition for the first time, by beating Académica do Mindelo (São Vicente ) by 29-20.
Speaking to Inforpress, Daniel David Soares, from the organization of the “Tarrafal Cup 2023”, gave an “extremely positive” assessment of this sporting event that took place from the 11th to the 17th, in the municipality of Tarrafal, highlighting the participation of more than 250 athletes and 13 teams in the event.
The event, costing 4,000 contos, according to the organization, aimed to promote tourism and sports in this municipality in the interior of Santiago, as well as the development of handball in Cape Verde.
In the women’s category, Graciosa (Tarrafal), Universidade de Santiago (Santa Catarina), Girassol da Várzea (Cidade da Praia) also participated, and in the men’s team the teams of Atlético de São Vicente, ASA Stars and Girassol (both from Cidade da Praia) also participated. and Fidjus de Tabanka, Graciosa and Varandinha, all from Tarrafal de Santiago.
Promoted by Grupo Desportivo Varandinha in partnership with Tarrafal City Council, the event also included the involvement of several other local and national entities.
Parallel to the competition, the “II Tarrafal Cup Handball Technical Clinic” was organized with a theory and practical focus for coaches, athletes, teachers, and other interested parties.
