Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean Institute for Children and Adolescents (ICCA) warned today of the risks of using images of children and adolescents in aid campaigns in São Vicente, as they can expose minors to danger and constitute a violation of their rights.
According to the institute, in the case of minors, even when authorized by their parents, public exposure must be carefully considered so as not to jeopardize the child’s safety and dignity.
“We never know who is on the other side of the screen, nor their intentions. While there are well-intentioned people, we cannot ignore the fact that there are also those with bad intentions. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect children and prevent their unnecessary exposure,” it explained.
The ICCA added that, according to the Statute of Children and Adolescents, the principle of the best interests of the child must always prevail, ensuring their physical, psychological, intellectual, and moral development.
And since the Constitution of the Republic, the Civil Code, and the Penal Code of Cape Verde enshrine and protect the right to one’s image, as a fundamental right of personality, consent is required for its use.
Therefore, he urged everyone, especially civil society, to ensure that any publication adheres to the principle of the best interests of the child, refraining from using the image of minors in solidarity actions.
“The mobilization in favor of São Vicente is worthy of recognition, but the reconstruction of the island must proceed without, at any time, compromising the physical and emotional integrity of children,” he concluded.
