Africa-Press – Cape verde. Evaneida Fortes has been awarded a NASA Space Grant, which will allow her to develop devices that use light particles called photons to aid in astronaut health monitoring and exoplanet exploration, reports Bridgewater State University (BSU).

The same source emphasized that the young woman, while refining design algorithms to develop viable concepts, is working with materials scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to understand the extreme environments in which these devices must operate.

“I enjoy solving problems and being challenged,” she said in an interview with the Bridgewater University website, adding that mathematics can be applied to many different areas and that she is having a lot of fun with this research.

As BSU progresses, Evaneida Fortes is also participating in the university’s 4 + 1 program, through which she can complete her bachelor’s degree while also beginning her master’s degree in mathematics.

Outside of the classroom, she is a Resident Assistant in the Honors Life Learning Community, a position through which she mentors other Honors students and introduces them to the opportunities at BSU that she finds so valuable.
