IGAE Seeks Shelf Price Verification and Complaint Filing

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Inspector General of IGAE told Inforpress today that the institution has been conducting inspections in minimarkets and retailers, and that one of the aspects most frequently addressed in the inspection report is the price on the shelves.

According to Paulo Monteiro, in an interview with Inforpress, the General Inspection of Economic Activities (IGAE) has encountered this situation of price changes for food products when the consumer pays at the checkout, making them several times more expensive than what is displayed on the shelves.

“If a product has a price of R$ 100 on the shelf, the price at the checkout, on the receipt received, should be the same,” he emphasized, warning consumers to pay close attention when paying.

Paulo Monteiro also stressed that if a consumer notices this anomaly, they should first request the complaint book and then file a complaint with IGAE with all supporting documents, which could be the payment slip or photos of the price displayed on the shelf.

“This procedure, in itself, is a means of proof that will be taken into consideration in the investigation as an administrative process,” he stated, informing that such a procedure is considered fraud, since it is mandatory to have a correct price on the shelf.

According to clarifications from the Inspector General of IGAE, the institution has received many complaints about product prices that are one thing on the shelf and another at the checkout, hence it has been conducting inspections to verify the inflation.

Regarding this procedure, he warned that IGAE has been carrying out on-site verification inspections, having applied fines to some minimarkets and retailers for this practice considered deceptive.

In Praia, consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the discrepancy between the prices displayed on the shelves and the amounts charged at the checkout of some commercial establishments, asking operators to be “more transparent” and IGAE to always monitor the situation.
