PC warns about order scam on social media

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Judicial Police (PJ) warned the public today about the package scam that has been circulating on the islands, stating that there have already been several complaints, with a considerable number of victims losing large sums of money.

In a statement, the PJ explained how the fraud works.

According to the police, the scheme begins with an interaction via social media, in which the scammer presents himself as an admirer or interested party of the victim. After a few days of conversation, the scammer informs them that they have a package to send to the victim.

The victim then receives a call from a foreign number, via WhatsApp or through national telecommunications networks, from another scammer informing them of a package for them.

But the victim is informed that a certain amount is required to receive it. In this call, you will receive the details for making the payment.

The victim makes the payment and, days later, is contacted again by a new foreign number, informing them that their package is being held at another international customs office, en route to Cape Verde. They then request a new payment for the product to be shipped to the country.

If the victim makes this payment, they are contacted again, this time by a domestic number, where the criminal identifies themselves as the agency responsible for the package and requests an additional payment to unblock the package at Cape Verdean customs.

According to the same source, the victim ultimately pays several considerable sums without receiving any package, thus configuring a scam. Although there is certainly no order.

Therefore, the public is advised to be vigilant and cautious when contacting them on social media, as scammers are using increasingly sophisticated means to mislead victims.

“In case of doubt or suspicion, it is advisable to report it immediately to the PJ or by calling the free number 134,” the authority said.
