Africa-Press – Cape verde. In a note sent to Inforpress, the president of this non-governmental organization (NGO), Dionísio Simões Pereira, began by emphasizing that the election demonstrated the “solidity and robustness” of Cape Verdean democracy.
However, according to the same source, it was with “concern” that the CV Forum noted the high level of abstention and the various reports of illegal practices, such as “buying consciences” or the use for electoral purposes of the image of individuals and family members who are beneficiaries of subsistence measures, “exploiting the vulnerability of the most vulnerable segments of society”.
“In the case of vote buying, as well as the prevention of vote buying through the ‘renting’ of identification documents, although this is not new, these are practices that weaken the integrity of the electoral process and deserve to be firmly combated”, stressed Domingos Simões Pereira.
Hence the call for the authorities to assume their responsibilities in investigating these irregularities and adopting the necessary measures, in accordance with the law.
On another note, the head of Fórum CV congratulated all the candidates, winners and losers, for their contribution to building a “more participatory and vibrant” democracy. He also congratulated the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), which emerged victorious in this democratic process, as well as the competitors, for the “spirit of respect and acceptance demonstrated” which, according to Simões Pereira, is a reflection of the maturity of democracy. As for the organization, he acknowledged the “exemplary and highly competent work” carried out in managing the electoral process by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and the General Directorate for Support to the Electoral Process (DGAPE). The recognition extends to the Operational Center for the Information Society (NOSI) which, in his opinion, highlighted, once again, the “transparency and speed” in processing and publishing the results. Addressing the winners, Simões Pereira reminded those elected to the municipal councils and assemblies about the importance of fulfilling the commitments made to the citizens through their electoral promises. He urged them to align themselves with the proposals outlined in the Civic Manifesto for the 2024 Local Elections, launched on the first day of the electoral campaign, November 14, by the CV Forum itself, which called for responsible governance and citizen participation.
