Africa-Press – Cape verde. The MP for the Movement for Democracy (MpD) Euclides Silva condemned this Thursday the statements made by a member of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) against the National Police, classifying them as “violent attacks with insults”.
The reaction came during a meeting with the new national director of the National Police, during which the MP expressed his party’s solidarity with the force, in light of the recent incident in the National Assembly, which, he stated, should focus on defending the institutions of the rule of law.
“We are taking advantage of this meeting to express our full solidarity with the police force, after having witnessed a violent attack in parliament by a member of the PAICV, with insults thrown in between”, stated Euclides Silva, considering that such a stance is not in keeping with the role of a democratic institution.
The MP stressed that the National Police does not deserve this type of treatment from any political force, stressing the importance of respecting and defending the institutions that guarantee public order in the country.
“The National Assembly must be at the forefront of defending the institutions of the rule of law. We completely distance ourselves from these offensive statements and publicly express our support and respect for the work that the National Police has been doing”, he stressed.
Euclides Silva took the opportunity to praise the performance of the corporation in combating and preventing crime, acknowledging significant progress in recent years, both in terms of resources and motivation of its personnel.
The MP’s statements come after a speech by PAICV MP Gisela Lopes, who denounced alleged mistreatment and abusive deportations of African citizens at Cape Verde airports.
The MP criticized what she considers discriminatory practices and racism and called for the creation of an independent mechanism to monitor these situations.
His accusations sparked reactions from MpD MPs, including Euclides Silva, who rejected any idea of institutional racism in the Cape Verdean security forces.
Faced with these criticisms, the national director of the National Police, Jorge Humberto Andrade, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strict compliance with the law, rejecting political interference in the functioning of the force.
“It is not up to the national police leadership to respond to political consorts. We are aware of who we are and we work in accordance with the law. We comply with the legal principles”, declared Jorge Andrade, stressing that the Border Police act based on the legislation in force and are open to any legal changes that may be made by the competent authorities.
“If there is a need to change the legislation, we will comply with the law in its entirety. We are not here to criticize anyone. We are simply doing our duty”, he concluded.
