Assomada, in the municipality of Santa Catarina de Santiago, celebrates today, May 13, the 22 years of its elevation to the category of city, also the day of its patron saint, Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The President of the Republic congratulated the “biggest city in North Santiago” for its route and historical role.
In a message sent to the Mayor, Jassira Monteiro, the Head of State highlights the “historic role played by the largest city in North Santiago, its great potential in various sectors, as well as the advances it has been registering”.
“Due to its centrality in the interior of Santiago, due to its historic role in leveraging the region’s economy, Assomada is configured as an unavoidable development pole for the future of this island and the country”, underlines José Maria Neves.
The PR says it is pleased to note that the effects of the last crises faced by the country and the Municipality are dissipating and there are signs of recovery and vitality.
“Its growing economic dynamics comes in the wake of a vocation as a commercial hub, in addition to its social, historical and cultural importance. The City is the seat of a municipality whose potential in the areas of agriculture, livestock, fishing, agro-industry, tourism, crafts, gastronomy and commerce can be further explored”, he highlights.
José Maria Neves also underlines the gains achieved by the city since it acquired city status, including “effective growth, new developments, increased access to new services”, in addition to hosting the University of Santiago and one of the centers of the University of Cape Verde.
However, he recognizes that the city still faces “many challenges related to its growth, which are more evident in urban and infrastructure issues”.
