Africa-Press – Cape verde. The director of the Santiago Norte Health Region (RSSN) said this Monday that the Santa Catarina Health Department and the Santa Rita Vieira Regional Hospital (HRSRV) will have human milk collection points by December.
João Baptista Semedo spoke in statements to Inforpress, on the sidelines of the launch of the breast milk donation campaign and the presentation of the “Breast Milk Collection” project, within the scope of World Human Milk Donation Day, celebrated today under the motto “Human milk donation – a humanitarian gesture that feeds hope”.
According to the manager, the event aimed to raise awareness among all health structures in the Santiago Norte Health Region (RSSN) about this campaign that will take place from May to December, aiming to identify the focal point of each structure, following up with training on the process of collecting, storing and distributing human milk.
Semedo added that another objective is that, after the campaign, RSSN will have two fixed human milk collection points by December 2025, more specifically, at the Santa Catarina Health Department and HRSRV.
“After the training, we will begin the process of implementing the campaign in June/July. In other words, the focal points will help identify and raise awareness among mothers who are breastfeeding their children and who have excess milk, who will become donors of human milk,” the doctor indicated.
However, it was announced that before the implementation of two fixed collection points in the region, all the milk collected will be sent to the Human Milk Bank at the Agostinho Neto Hospital (HAN), in Praia, which will serve as food for hospitalized newborn children with low birth weight or who have a medical indication to receive breast milk from another mother.
On the occasion, he informed that RSSN will have the support of the HAN Milk Bank in setting up the “Breast Milk Collection” project, from training and identification of materials for the two fixed human milk collection points.
At the event, which took place in the training room of the Santa Catarina Police Station, a commitment term was signed by all RSSN structures and the Human Milk Bank.
