Africa-Press – Cape verde. The São Vicente Health Department will hold a massive cleanup campaign across the island’s various communities next Saturday, August 9th. The initiative aims to prevent the reintroduction of malaria into the country and curb the spread of dengue fever. The campaign is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., with a gathering at local health clinics.
In an interview with Rádio Morabeza, Health Secretary Elísio Silva explained that this is a regular annual cleanup campaign.
“As is customary at this time of year, with the rainy season forecast, the health department intends to conduct a cleanup campaign on the island to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. The entire São Vicente population is called upon to participate in this anti-vector campaign, which involves eliminating mosquito breeding grounds in the communities,” he explained.
The São Vicente Health Secretary guarantees that the island “has not recorded any cases of dengue fever or malaria in recent months.”
Elísio Silva emphasizes that the department’s work encompasses several fronts.
“Currently, we have groups of young people trained in anti-vector control who help the Health Department in their communities by providing information to the public. Earlier this week, a group of over 200 young volunteers provided information in the Ribeira de Craquinha community. We have trained young health promoters who, along with nurses and social workers, carry out this awareness-raising work in their communities. It’s a fight that must involve everyone—authorities and residents alike—for us to achieve results,” he assures.
The fight is being focused on eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds.
Despite the controlled situation, the Health Department is carrying out spraying operations in all areas of the island, with the support of the Armed Forces and the Cape Verde Red Cross, as explained by the health delegate.
When asked about critical areas, Elísio Silva points to “areas with wells that accumulate water and places with open sewage.”
