São Vicente: New Board of Directors of Hospital Baptista de Sousa sworn in today

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The new Board of Directors of Hospital Baptista de Sousa, in São Vicente, takes office today, after the controversy over the death of seven newborns in this hospital unit. The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva and the Minister of Health, Filomena Gonçalves, chair the ceremony.

The new Board of Directors will be chaired by Helena Rebelo Rodrigues. Nair Chantre Lucas, first member, will assume the position of clinical director, Vera Lúcia Monteiro, second member and superintendent nurse; Aristides Ramos, third member and administrator; and Paulo Freire, fourth non-administrative member.

According to the order, issued by the prime minister’s office and published in the Official Bulletin, the appointment of the new Board of Directors aims to create conditions for the proper functioning of that health establishment.

Death of seven newborns

The appointment of the new Board of Directors comes after the allegations related to the death of seven babies in the Neonatology service of the Hospital at the beginning of this month of May.

After the complaint, the Ministry of Health announced the appointment of a team of specialists in the areas of gynecology-obstetrics, neonatology and nursing, composed of professionals from the Hospital Agostinho Neto, in the city of Praia, and from the National Directorate of Health for an investigation, whose report should be presented by the end of this month.

In February, the director of the HBS Neonatology Service, Cátia Costa, also confirmed the death of five other newborn babies in January, clarifying that the causes were prematurity and congenital malformations.

The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, also asked, through a publication on his facebook, for an “independent audit” to investigate the causes of the deaths of the seven babies at the Baptista de Sousa Hospital, in Mindelo, to allow the appropriate measures to be taken.
