Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal, Ely Sy Beye, congratulated the Cape Verdean national football team today on its historic qualification for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, achieved with a 3-0 victory over Eswatini.

The ambassador was speaking to reporters at the end of a meeting that the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, held with the ambassadors of the Republic of Senegal and the Kingdom of Morocco, at the request of the diplomats.

The meeting takes place within the framework of bilateral relations and active diplomacy that Cape Verde maintains with African countries and partners.

According to the diplomat, the visit’s main objective was to express the satisfaction of the diplomatic corps and congratulate the Cape Verdean people for their demonstration of solidarity and support for the national team.

“What we told the President was that we renew our countries’ availability, because Morocco has already been to the World Cup seven times and Senegal will be in its fourth consecutive World Cup,” he stated, anticipating effective participation that will allow Cape Verde to go far in the competition.

The ambassador reinforced the idea of ​​cooperation and exchange between the nations of the continent, emphasizing the importance of leveraging the experience of Senegal and Morocco to support Cape Verde in its tournament debut.

“What we are studying is how to work with the presidents of the federations to leverage the experience of Senegal and Morocco, and to achieve a very interesting level of training,” he said.

The initiative, according to Ely Sy Beye, includes an exchange of experiences between federations, joint training sessions, and technical consulting, aiming to strengthen the Cape Verdean national team’s performance in the biggest event in world football.

The Cape Verdean national team qualified on Monday, the 13th, for the final stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Eswatini 3-0 in the 10th and final round of African qualifying, played at the National Stadium.

Despite qualifying, the team dropped one place in the FIFA rankings, from 70th to 71st, according to the rankings released today.

The 23rd edition of the World Cup will be played from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The group stage draw is scheduled for December 6 in Washington, DC, and for the first time, the tournament will be held in three host countries.
