Water Production in São Vicente Could Resume Next Tuesday

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Electra is working to gradually resume water production next Tuesday and begin distribution on Wednesday of next week. This information was released today by Vitória Veríssimo, spokesperson for the Crisis Office, during the daily briefing.

The water supply in Mindelo remains hampered due to damage caused by the rain to the company’s equipment.

“The entire water production plan is already being processed. Production will begin on Tuesday. On Wednesday, in principle, a gradual distribution of these resources will begin. There is also the possibility of having other resource plans for water production. Civil Protection has a desalination system, but the problem, at the moment, is where to capture this water for desalination, since the entire coast is covered in mud,” he stated.

Currently, “the little water available” is being distributed according to a community supply and service plan, which prioritizes essential structures.

“What little water there is is being channeled according to the community supply and service plan. Our priority is the Baptista de Sousa Hospital, for example, which is a structure that must function, as well as the entire health network. Yesterday, using trucks, three areas were supplied, including Calhau and Salamansa,” he stated.

Water production and distribution on the island of São Vicente has been completely paralyzed since early Monday morning due to damage caused by flooding in the João Ribeiro intake area.

According to Electra, a landslide near the intake station isolated the infrastructure, preventing the collection of seawater needed for the desalination process.

Authorities hope that the Portuguese Navy’s Ocean Patrol Vessel NRP SINES, with desalination capacity, which arrived in São Vicente today, can help alleviate the island’s water shortage.
