Africa-Press – Eswatini. Libutfo walked nine kilometres through the Hlane wilderness to honour tradition during day three of Butimba ceremony.

The journey began after His Majesty King Mswati III commissioned the regiments at Hlane Royal Residence. With great anticipation, the Libutfo set off at midday, reaching their hunting assembly point, Emdolofiyeni inside Hlane Royal National Park, by 2pm.

The day carried a sense of grandeur as His Majesty, joined by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, senators, and senior officials from both public and private sectors, participated in the ceremony. Princes and Emazinyane also graced the event, making it a true national gathering. Although the Emakhosikati to His Majesty were present for the commissioning, the ceremony itself was largely attended by men.

Tradition in Motion

The morning began with vibrant traditional dances at Hlane Royal Residence, where the Libutfo performed Kuhlehla and Umgubho. The regiments comprised men in traditional attire, uniformed officers from the UEDF, REPS, HMCS, ENFRES, and Scouts, as well as members of the public in modern dress. The sight of diverse groups coming together reflected the spirit of unity and cultural pride.

A particularly joyous moment came when Bayes’skhulu invited the King to join the regiments in the Umgubho dance. The excitement was palpable as His Majesty danced side by side with his people, reinforcing the bond between the throne and the nation.

The 9km March

At midday, through Indvuna Comentanyeni Magagula, the King commissioned the regiments to march towards Emdolofiyeni. The two-hour journey passed through gravel roads, stony paths, and stretches of dusty plaster soil. Yet the challenges of the road were lightened by laughter, singing, dancing, and the occasional cool breeze under the partly cloudy skies.

The route was secured by soldiers and police, ensuring safety throughout. Along the way, some enjoyed refreshments, others paused for rest, and a few rode in vehicles when fatigue set in. Spirits remained high as the Libutfo pressed on until they crossed into the Hlane Royal National Park, where they were warmly joined by Big Game Parks rangers.

Arrival at Emdolofiyeni

Upon arrival, the regiments were welcomed with water and once again burst into the Umgubho dance, celebrating the accomplishment of their walk. Those carrying firearms registered before proceeding with the traditional hunt, while others made their way back to the Hlane Royal Residence after fulfilling their part in the ceremony.

The Butimba Day 3 walk was more than just a march, it was a living testament to endurance, unity, and the celebration of Eswatini’s timeless cultural traditions.
