Croydon Community Leads Successful Clean-Up and Tree Planting

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Croydon community recently hosted a successful clean-up and tree planting initiative, demonstrating strong commitment to environmental conservation and community well-being.

The event, held on Saturday, November 29,2025 was made possible through partnerships with the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES) and the Eswatini Environmental Authority (EEA).

The Initiative aimed to promote cleanliness and environmental stewardship in the community. Similo Khoza, Ranch Manager Iysis at the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation, highlighted the importance of collaboration in such efforts. “By joining hands, we can make a meaningful impact in our communities and foster a positive relationship between our company and the neighbouring communities,” Khoza said.

Armstrong Sibandze from the Eswatini Environmental Authority emphasized the health and legal implications of poor waste management. “We commend the community for taking the initiative to keep the environment clean,” Sibandze said.

“Dirty environments can lead to various diseases, and it’s crucial that we take responsibility for our actions.” He further noted that littering is punishable by law under the 2011 regulations, with fines of up to E5,000 for improper waste disposal. Even minor offenses, such as discarding a sweet wrapper or cigarette butt, can result in fines of E50.

The Chairman of the Council of the local soccer teams, supported by RES, explained that environmental initiatives have become a part of Croydon’s community culture. “We’ve taken it upon ourselves to turn this into a way of life,” he said. “We’ve made it a law in our community that we keep our environment clean, and we encourage others to do the same.”

The clean-up and tree planting initiative highlighted the power of partnerships and the community’s dedication to safeguarding their environment. Residents and partners alike expressed hope that these efforts would inspire other communities to take similar action.
