ESWATINI LAUNCHES FIRST-EVER CENTRAL HEALTHCARE WASTE FACILITY

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini has officially launched the construction of its first-ever centralized healthcare waste treatment facility.

The sod-cutting ceremony, held at the Matsapha Industrial Site, marked a giant leap toward a cleaner, safer and more advanced healthcare system.

Acting Minister for Health led the ceremony, expressing deep joy and national pride: “I am ecstatic to finally see this remarkable and historic day. Our healthcare waste will now be treated according to world standards, proving that the country is indeed moving closer to attaining First World status.”

The project is not just a health-sector milestone; it is a powerful testament to national collaboration and foresight. What once began as a vision during the tenures of Dr. Simon Zwane and Khanya Mabuza has now materialized into a fully funded and carefully designed facility, thanks to strategic leadership and the support of the Global Fund through NERCHA.

The new facility aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing – and upholds Eswatini’s Environmental Management Act of 2002. Once operational, it will solve a long-standing issue: the accumulation of medical and pharmaceutical waste. “This project comes at an opportune time,” the Minister emphasized. “We are challenged with increasing waste, and this facility ensures we meet environmental standards while protecting public health.”

Importantly, the facility’s cutting-edge design addresses climate change concerns. It will incorporate modern technology that eliminates harmful emissions, reducing the country’s carbon footprint and ending costly cross-border waste treatment.

In a powerful demonstration of inter-ministerial unity, the Ministry of Health partnered with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Matsapha Town Council to bring the project to life. The Minister also extended gratitude to Mott Macdonald, Elcor Consortium, and the Joint Venture construction team of J&E Construction/Total Construction for their expertise and dedication.

As construction begins, hope and excitement ripple across the nation. Eswatini is not only addressing a critical infrastructure gap but is also proving that it is serious about sustainable development, health innovation, and responsible governance.

With this milestone, Eswatini lights the way toward a future where public health and environmental care go hand in hand—firmly on the path to First World status.
