Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula has officially commissioned the construction of Eswatini first world-class centralized healthcare waste treatment plant in Matsapha.

The ground breaking ceremony, held in collaboration with the Matsapha Town Council and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, marks a significant step towards improving medical waste management in the country.

Funded by the Global Fund, the state-of-the-art incinerator is expected to save the government more than E21 million by treating pharmaceutical and medical waste locally. Previously, certain types of hazardous waste had to be shipped abroad for proper disposal an expensive and unsustainable solution.

Speaking at the event, Minister Matsebula expressed the ministry’s long-standing need for such a facility. “This is one of the important projects we have been longing for as a Ministry. It has been the missing link in the health sector,” he said.

The facility, set to be constructed at the Matsapha Industrial Site, will treat all types of medical waste in a sanitary and environmentally compliant manner. This will not only improve safety but also ensure adherence to international environmental standards.

The Minister further emphasized the urgent need to manage the rising volumes of pharmaceutical waste while remaining compliant with environmental regulations. “This comes at an opportune time when we are challenged with a lot of medical and pharmaceutical waste,” he added. “Most importantly, it will eliminate the need to treat certain waste types outside the country.”

Once completed, the facility is expected to revolutionize healthcare waste management in Eswatini, making the process both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.
