Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini will host the prestigious African Traditional Leaders Conference from 4–9 September 2025, drawing chiefs, kings, and elders from across the continent to engage on matters affecting traditional leadership and its role in modern governance.

The announcement was made by Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini during a press briefing at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha on Friday, 29 August 2025.

Reviving the Role of Traditional Leadership

Minister Dlamini emphasised that the conference is an important milestone for Africa, where traditional leaders—once marginalised under colonial rule—are regaining recognition for their pivotal role in shaping and guiding communities.

He mentioned that Eswatini is honoured to host this gathering of Africa’s custodians of culture and heritage. Traditional leaders are seen as central to community development, conflict resolution, and the preservation of identity. This platform will allow them to share knowledge and strengthen their contribution to national and continental progress.

Eswatini as a Model of Tradition and Governance

Eswatini, with its unique system of governance that integrates modern structures with traditional leadership, is seen by others as an inspiration to other African nations.

The conference is expected to feature panel discussions, cultural exchanges, and workshops designed to equip leaders with tools to navigate today’s socio-economic challenges while upholding African traditions.

A Continental Dialogue

Delegates are expected from across the African Union member states, with topics ranging from the role of chiefs in promoting peace and unity, to sustainable development, youth empowerment, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

The five-day event is also expected to include cultural showcases and field visits to traditional institutions in Eswatini, giving participants first-hand experience of how the kingdom preserves and empowers its indigenous structures.

Hosting this conference is viewed as a step towards reflecting Eswatini’s commitment to celebrating tradition while embracing development. It is an opportunity not only for dialogue, but for Africa to reclaim and strengthen the voice of its traditional leaders.
