PRIME MINISTER PRAISES STRONG TURNOUT AT BUTIMBA CEREMONY

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has expressed his delight at the impressive turnout for this year’s Butimba ceremony, where thousands of Libutfo are joining His Majesty King Mswati III in the traditional hunting expedition.

The annual cultural event began on Sunday, 24 August 2025, when His Majesty officially commissioned Butimba at the Ludzidzini and Ngabezweni Royal Residences.

“A Joy to Be Among the Throngs”

Speaking during the ongoing ceremony, the Prime Minister said he was honoured to be among the multitudes of warriors participating in the event alongside the King.

“I am pleased to see the excitement and unity of Libutfo as they march and take part in this year’s Butimba. The energy and spirit of the participants are truly encouraging,” he said.

Marching for Culture and Fitness

The Prime Minister highlighted that he particularly enjoyed the marches to different parts of Hlane Royal National Park, where selected wild animals were hunted. He noted that the physical aspect of the ceremony doubled as a valuable form of exercise.

He also praised His Majesty’s active involvement in the marching, observing the King’s impressive pace and enthusiasm throughout the ceremony. The first march, which took place on Tuesday (August 26, 2025), covered a distance of about nine kilometres to hunt at Emdolofiyeni, in Hlane Royal National Park. The second march, which took place the following day, covered a distance of about four kilometres to Ngonini, within Hlane. On Thursday (August 28, 2025), Libutfo covered a distance of eight kilometres to Emalahleni in Hlane. The weather during Butimba is generally warm to hot, but the Libutfo is not deterred as it braves all the weather conditions to participate in this event.

Ceremony Going as Planned

Dlamini added that so far the event was proceeding smoothly, with participants fully engaged and visibly proud to be part of the cultural occasion.

The Butimba ceremony, one of Eswatini’s treasured cultural traditions, continues to draw large numbers of participants each year, symbolising unity, heritage, and respect for the nation’s customs.
