HISTORIC UMHLANGA: 35 MAIDENS WITH DISABILITIES MAKE HISTORY

Africa-Press – Eswatini. For the first time ever, 35 maidens living with disabilities took centre stage at the Umhlanga Reed Dance Ceremony, breaking barriers and setting a milestone for social inclusion in Eswatini.

The differently-abled participants, including those with albinism, hearing impairments, and physical disabilities, braved the scorching 30°C sun to arrive at Ngabezweni Royal Residence.

They enjoyed lunch before being commissioned by His Majesty King Mswati III to cut the reed, with special gifts from the King.

The Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla joined the group, celebrating their historic participation. HRH Princess Sakhizwe ensured that all logistics, including transport, accommodation, food, water, and sun protection, were perfectly arranged. Additional support included traditional attire (emahiya and emagcebesha) from Mr. Cheap and hats from Nompilo Dlamini for sun protection.

Bongiwe Dlamini, co-founder of The Sunscreen Drive, said, “We are proud to see social inclusion through culture come alive with our sisters who are differently-abled attending the Reed Dance Ceremony.”

Organizers say the event marks a turning point for persons with disabilities, showing that cultural traditions can embrace everyone.
