Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Luyengo Business Area was the scene of an inspiring community-led clean-up campaign over the weekend, bringing together students, residents, officials and environmental groups in a powerful demonstration of local action for a cleaner, healthier environment.
The campaign took place on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Green Team facilitator Mmema Mlungisi said the effort reflected a long-term vision for sustainable community development. “This is more than a clean-up,” he said. “We are building a culture of environmental responsibility. When our community spaces are clean, we are protecting public health and investing in the wellbeing of Luyengo residents and students.”
Health Inspector Musa C. Hlophe highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening public health systems. “A clean environment is the first line of defence against communicable diseases,” he said. “This campaign addresses sanitation challenges head-on, and we are proud to support an initiative that places community health at the centre.”
The Initiative aligns with national environmental priorities and global sustainability targets, particularly the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable cities, good health and responsible waste management.
Volunteers cleared clogged drains, removed litter from roadside verges, cleaned market stalls and tackled waste hotspots that have long troubled traders and shoppers.
Enactus representative Amelia Ngwenya praised the unity displayed on the day. “Seeing different groups come together shows how much we value our shared spaces,” she said. “We are contributing to long-term change, not just a day’s work.”
The campaign also marks the beginning of a broader waste management strategy. Newly formed committees will oversee waste collection, transportation and disposal while engaging local businesses to understand and manage their waste streams more effectively.
With plans to make clean-up campaigns a regular programme, the partners say they are committed to building a greener, cleaner and more sustainable Luyengo for all.
