MNISI, SIBANDA NAMED TOP STARS AT SCORPION TOURNAMENT

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The 2025 Scorpion International Volleyball Tournament brought together some of the finest talent across the region but two names rose above the rest: Sbekelwe “Dollar B” Mnisi and Trevor Mpumelelo Sibanda. The duo not only helped power their teams through the tournament but also walked away with top individual honors, cementing their places as elite volleyball athletes.

Mnisi was unstoppable throughout the tournament, earning a hat-trick of accolades—Best Attacker, Best Server, and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. For the Mbikwakhe-born player, it was a moment of pride and affirmation. “It was an amazing experience once again,” she said. “The environment was electric… and it pushed me to grow, both as an athlete and a teammate.” added Mnisi.

Sibanda, originally from Matsapha, was equally dominant, receiving the MVP and Best Defender awards. A commanding presence on the court, he led with energy, strategy, and heart. “My teammates look up to me to always stay on high energy and be vocal on court, no time to put your head down,” he said, reflecting on the intensity of the tournament’s final stages.

Their Journey to Greatness

Sbekelwe’s volleyball journey began with passion and curiosity. “I was inspired by the energy, teamwork, and spirit that the sport brings,” she explained. Over time, that interest became purpose. Her career has steadily grown, with other recent achievements including Best Attacker and MVP at the 2024 Scorpions International Tournament, and Best Attacker at the 2024 Phoenix Tournament.

Trevor’s story began in 2009 when, at 16 years old, he was invited to a trial for an under-20 national team. Despite lacking experience, he was determined. “The coaches were just talking negatively about us, calling us tall for nothing kids… that just pushed me hard because I wanted to prove a point.” And prove it he did. His resume is filled with awards: Best Blocker in 2014, multiple MVP titles between 2017 and 2018, Player of the Season in the 2018 Nedbank Volleyball League, and more.

Volleyball as a Life Teacher

Both Mnisi and Sibanda credit volleyball with shaping their lives far beyond the court. For Sbekelwe, the sport has been transformational. “It has given me a sense of purpose, built my confidence, and opened doors to travel, friendships, and new opportunities,” he said. “It’s more than a game to me it’s been a life-shaping journey.”

Trevor adds that the sport has helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle and taught him leadership. “Being a sports person, you have to lead by example and be an ambassador of the sport,” he said. However, he admits it’s come at a cost: “It has taken a lot of my time away from my family.” Even so, he remains committed to the game that has given him so much.

Words of Wisdom for Future Stars

Both athletes are passionate about sharing their experiences with the next generation. “Don’t just focus on talent work hard, stay coachable, and be a team player,” advised Sbekelwe. “Respect the game, your teammates, and yourself.”

Trevor echoes those sentiments, urging aspiring players to give their all. “If volleyball or any other sport is your dream, go all out,” he said. “Always strive for greatness never settle for less.”

A Legacy in the Making

The performances of Mnisi and Sibanda at the Scorpion International Tournament were not just about awards they were a reflection of years of grit, sacrifice, and love for the game. Their names now stand among the finest in regional volleyball, and their stories continue to inspire.

As Sbekelwe humbly puts it, “I’m still learning.” And with that mindset, their journey is far from over.
