Africa-Press – Eswatini. The countdown is on for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games, set to ignite Windhoek from July 4 to 13, 2025. The draws for team sports have been finalized, promising thrilling contests across volleyball, football, netball, and basketball, with ten countries vying for regional supremacy.
Eswatini’s young athletes face a challenging road. In netball, the U19 women’s team has landed in Pool A, where they will battle heavyweights Malawi, Zambia, and South Africa. The men’s U20 football squad finds itself in Pool B alongside South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana, while the women’s U20 footballers also compete in Pool B, set to clash with Zambia, South Africa, and Angola.
The tournament format features pool play, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals-a structure designed to ensure that only the best progress to the medal rounds. With more than 2,500 athletes and officials expected, the event is a major logistical undertaking for Namibia, which stepped in as host after Mozambique’s withdrawal due to Cyclone Freddy’s aftermath.
Preparations are well underway, with organizers assuring that all venues will meet international standards and the University of Namibia set to serve as the Games Village. The Games, themed “Own Your Moment,” are not just about competition-they are a celebration of youth potential and regional unity, offering a launchpad for future sporting stars.
As the draw sets the stage, anticipation is building for what promises to be a showcase of Southern Africa’s brightest young talent. All eyes will be on Windhoek this July as the Region 5 Youth Games bring the spirit of unity, excellence, and fierce competition to the heart of Namibia.
