Africa-Press – Eswatini. Senators have applauded the appointment of former Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Moses Vilakati to become one of the African Union (AU) Commissioners.

The senators made this expression in the 2024/25 annual performance debate report of the Private and Cabinet Offices. The senators mentioned that the appointment would have a positive impact on the country’s image.

Senator Chief Prince Ngangabani, who is chairman of the Private and Cabinet Offices’ Senate portfolio committee, was one of the senators who commended this milestone. Senator Tony Sibandze was another senator who praised Vilakati for his appointment.

“One commends the appointment of emaSwati into high positions in international and regional bodies such as the African Union. This includes the appointment of former Minister of Agriculture Mr. Moses Vilakati who has been appointed as the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Development. This is indeed plausible,” Chief Prince Ngangabani said.

The senator further commended the election of the country into the AU Peace and Security Council representing the Southern African region. “This also demonstrates that Eswatini is capable and that if we worked in unity, we would achieve a lot as a country,” he said.

Senator Tony Sibandze, on the other hand, said the appointment of the former Minister, Mr. Moses Vilakati, into the AU Commission is applauded. “This is considered as an achievement for the country,” Sibandze said.

In response, the prime minister said it was good for citizens of this country to be recognised in international organisations such as the AU. He said it was important for more Emaswati to participate in international organisations.

Vilakati was elected to head the Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) department. He served as a minister in Eswatini in both the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs in 2018 to 2023 prior to which he was the Minister of Agriculture 2013 to 2018.

Previously, he served as the Project Director at the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise, the Agribusiness Project Manager at EWADE, and Project Director and Lecturer at UNESWA. He has a Master of Science (MSc) in Agriculture (International Development) from the California Polytechnic State University.
