The General Secretary of The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU) has sounded optimistic that government will fulfill its commitment in improving the working conditions and status of teachers.
Marie Antoinette Corr-Jack made these remarks at the GTU as they prepares to join the rest of the world in marking World Teachers Day (WTD) which is held annually on 5th October to celebrate the teaching profession and promote the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of teachers (1966) and the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of higher education teaching personnel (1997), and complemented by the ILO Policy Guidelines on the Promotion of Decent Work for early Childhood Education Personnel (2014).
The day is celebrated to set a benchmark regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards and to focus on assessing, appreciating and improving educators around the world.
General Secretary Corr-Jack on behalf of the National Executive Committee of GTU congratulated the entire teaching fraternity in commemoration of the day. She said the day provides an opportunity to throw light on issues related to teachers and teaching.
Meanwhile, the theme of this year’s event is “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession”.
