Africa-Press – Ghana. The ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Angola, Mavis Esi Kusorgbor, said today in Luanda that she is determined to translate the political will of the leadership of Angola and her country, to implement viable initiatives for mutual economic benefits.

Regarding the 66th anniversary of Ghana’s independence, which is celebrated on Monday, the 6th, Mavis Kusorgbor said that the Government and people of Ghana are determined, through solid policies, to contribute to the impulse of global sustainable development.

“As the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from British colonial rule, on March 6, 1957, the liberation of Ghana was an inspiration for other countries in their search for self-determination”, stressed the diplomat.

He added that over the years, Ghana has continued to work, through bilateral and multilateral commitments, for the promotion of Pan-African ideals, focused, above all, on the economic and political well-being of the continent and its people.

He also underlined that although the formal diplomatic presence has been established at very different times in the respective countries, the Ghana-Angola bilateral relations have grown constantly since their acceptance.

He noted, for example, political interactions through high-level official visits, as a testimony to the promotion and deepening of economic commitments between the two countries.

“The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his Angolan counterpart, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, showed great leadership and commitment to promote and deepen the economic commitments between our two countries”, he maintained.

He added that the start of direct TAAG flights from Luanda (Angola) to Accra (Ghana), in November 2022, made it possible to reduce the journey from more than 36 hours to three and a half hours and at the same time favored a good business environment.

“We anticipate that the direct flight from Luanda to Accra will also serve as a catalyst to bridge the gap between West and Southern Africa and improve sub-regional trade and economic relations in support of the objectives of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA )”, he stressed.

Angola and Ghana, which share a common history in the struggle for national independence, initialed the first legal instruments of cooperation in 1976.

In 2019, the two countries signed a memorandum in the field of Education, with a view to the mobility of professors and researchers in higher education institutions and scientific research centers.

In the same year, an understanding was signed on the operation of the Bilateral Cooperation Commission and on the suppression of visas in diplomatic and service passports.

In another agreement, the two States defined the lines for strengthening cooperation in the areas of agriculture, defence, fisheries, training and education, transport and the mining industry.
