Africa-Press – Ghana. The KGL Group of Companies has joined forces with Parliament to celebrate the successful climax of the 2025 Democracy Cup, a civic-sporting initiative that uses football as a tool to deepen Ghana’s democratic culture and engage the youth.

The initiative, championed by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, travelled across the country engaging governance institutions, traditional rulers and security agencies before the final showdown on Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

As lead sponsor, KGL Group underscored its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen civic values and social cohesion.

Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, Executive Chairman, said the Group’s participation reflected its vision of responsible corporate citizenship.

“At the KGL Group, we believe that true success lies in our ability to give back meaningfully to the communities we serve. Entrepreneurship without philanthropy doesn’t mean anything,” he said.

The finale attracted political leaders, football enthusiasts, students and members of the public in a celebration of democracy and sport.

President John Dramani Mahama performed the ceremonial kickoff, describing the Cup as “a national symbol” and urging citizens to protect and deepen Ghana’s democratic gains.

“Football communicates democratic principles, rules, fairness, discipline and mutual respect in ways that resonate with young people,” he said.

The President received the Cup on behalf of all Ghanaians, saluting their resilience in sustaining the nation’s democratic journey.

The matchday programme began with a curtain-raiser between a Parliamentary XI captained by former Black Stars midfielder Agyemang Badu and a Judiciary XI led by John Mensah, supported by five former national players. This was followed by a local derby between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics.

After an evenly balanced first half, substitute Kwesi Asmah’s 70th-minute strike secured a 1–0 victory for Hearts of Oak, ending an eight-match winless streak against their city rivals.

The game drew a packed crowd including the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, Members of Parliament, Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku, corporate partners and football dignitaries.

Mr. Dadey said the tournament demonstrated how partnerships between the private sector and Parliament could advance civic engagement.

“The Democracy Cup is more than football, it is about strengthening the values that hold our society together,” he noted.

Organisers announced that the initiative would expand its reach internationally, with plans for matches in Germany and the United Kingdom. Hearts of Oak will travel to Germany for a friendly as part of the Cup’s growing footprint.

The event also treated fans to a vibrant stadium experience with giveaways, raffles and awards, reinforcing its mission to blend civic education with the passion of sport.

The 2025 Democracy Cup concluded not just as a football competition, but as a celebration of democracy, unity and the enduring power of football to inspire national pride.
