Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Moses Fordjour, an elder of the Prince of Peace Seventh Day Adventists Church, Gbawe, has called on Christians to use respectful and empowering language when addressing persons with disabilities.

“Words are powerful as the bible says, he said and urged Christians avoid using derogatory terms, and create a culture of welcome and respect within the church community.

Mr Fordjoiur made the call when he preached at an event to celebrate the Adventist Possibility Ministries Day.

The event was on the theme: Opening the doors of the church to persons with disabilities in the communities.”

He said it was the Christian’s responsibility to identify, empower and include persons with disabilities rather than allow them to remain isolated and excluded and urged them to proactively seek and reach out to persons with disabilities with the gospel.

Using the story of Mephibosheth in the Bible, he said that despite his disability and rejection, he was honoured and restored by King David; “a reflection of God’s grace and kindness.”

Mr Fordjour reminded the church to restore dignity, address barriers, and actively create opportunities for participation for persons with disabilities.

Referring to scripture in John chapter 9 Verus 1 to 3 where Jesus Christ was asked whether a man born blind from birth was suffering the consequences of his parent’s sin or his own sin, Mr Fordjour reiterated that disability was not a curse nor a punishment but an opportunity for God’s work to be revealed.

Ms. Sylvia Peprah, a person with dual sensory impairment (Deafblind), who was the special guest of honour, shared her inspiring life experiences, challenging the church to deepen its commitment to inclusion.

She commended the Seventh-day Adventist Church for instituting the Possibility Ministries program and encouraged members to continue creating spaces where persons with disabilities are welcomed, empowered, and involved.

Pastor Moses Kenu, the Head Pastor of Prince of Peace SDA Church, offered special prayers for members of the disability community, seeking God’s blessings for their continued strength, inclusion, and empowerment

The Adventist Possibility Ministries Day is celebrated annually by the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church to draw attention to the church’s role in promoting the gospel among members of the disability community, acknowledging their spiritual gifts, and affirming their place at “the King’s table.”
