KU JKUAT Set Class Resumption Dates After Strike Ends

Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenyatta University (KU) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have informed students to return to classes on Monday November 10, after lecturers ended their seven-week nationwide strike.

At Kenyatta University, the Academic Registrar, Bernard Kivunge, stated that all activities for the first semester of the 2025/26 academic year will resume on Monday November 10.

He urged all students to report to school on time to avoid missing classes.

“Following the calling off of the industrial action by members of staff in the University on 6th November 2025, all activities for the First Semester are expected to resume immediately,” Kivunge stated.

Similarly, JKUAT issued instructions to all students urging them to report back on Friday, November 7, ahead of class resumption on November 10, 2025.

“Following the calling off of the industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), all students are hereby requested to report back to the University on Friday, 7th November 2025,” JKUAT Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Robert Kinyua stated in a notice.

“Classes will resume on Monday, 10th November 2025,” the notice added.

The resumption notice came a day after the University and Allied Staff Union (UASU) and the Inter-Public Universities Councils’ Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) signed a return-to-work formula (RTWF), ending the strike and restoring normal operations in all public universities.

On November 5, UASU called off the strike after the government vowed to pay the salary arrears owed under the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“It is upon the government that you honour what we have signed here today. If you honour what we have signed here today, I want to commit that there shall be no strike called by UASU up to 2030,” said UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga.

In the agreement, lecturers were guaranteed protection from victimization, reinstatement of all staff and full payments of withheld benefits and salaries.

“All disciplinary or intended disciplinary actions, including show cause letters, suspensions, or dismissals, are hereby withdrawn and revoked with immediate effect,” the RTWF stated.
