Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenyan cooperative leaders have relaunched the International Month of Co-operatives (Ushirika Day) after two years break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a meeting at Kenya Bankers building on Thursday, the leaders said this year’s theme is “Co-operatives build a better World”.

State Department of Cooperatives PS Ishmail Abdi Noor said the social welfare activities will run for two months nationally culminating in the celebrations of the Co-operatives day.

The activities lined up for the period include leaders forum, blood donation drive, among others.

“The performance f co-operatives has generally been impressiven even in light of the coronavirus pandemic that bedeviled us over two years. The good results were enhanced by innovative products for education, health and SMEs,” NOor said.

The PS underscored some of the strides made in the sector including the review of the National Cooperative policy which culminated into a sessional paper of 2020.

“We have made deliberate efforts to address non-remittance to co-operatives and the outstanding amounts due will be reduced progressively,” he added.
