Africa-Press – Kenya. Education CS Ezekiel Machogu urged graduates to use the knowledge acquired to fight hunger. He said the universities are facing challenges but they will continue to support with finances.
“We want to feel the impact of universities in solving our homegrown problems,” Machogu said. He spoke on Saturday at Meru University of Science and Technology where he attended the tenth graduation ceremony at the institution.
In a gazette notice, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu appointed the new council members that took effect on March 10. Jane Kiringai will be the council chairperson.
Kiringai replaces former council chair Bosire Mwebi who had overseen the suspension of VC Romanus Odhiambo on February 27. The new council replaces Muriira M’Mbwiria, Stephen Kimani, Dick Waswa, Pauline Jeruto, Naomi Kipuri, Paul Mungai, and Damaris Nyasuguta (Treasury).
Before their dismissal, Machogu directed the Bosire Mwebi-led council to reinstate Odhiambo, saying his suspension had an ill motive. Machogu said they will be very careful in the people they select in future.
“We want men and women who know their job is to run institutions,” Machogu said He said Romanus was serving well and there was no urgency in sending him home since his term was to expire in August.
“He was doing well and I don’t see the reason why he had to be sent packing and the graduation was due,” Machogu said.
Tigania West MP John Mutunga said he was concerned with the latest unrest. “The university is near my home and when the university is running smoothly am happy and vice versa,” he said.
Mutunga said that he wants the university to grow, and he commended Vice-Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo for growing the student population from 4000 to 11000. Meru Deputy Governor Mutuma M’ithinkia said that the reinstatement of VC was a big reprieve not only to students but to the entire Meru.
“There was unrest for almost three days after students went on a rampage over the removal of VC but Machogu managed to calm the situation, we thank him for that,” M’ithinkia said.
