Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia’s promising taekwondo prodigy, Derrick Swaray, departed the country on Monday December 1,2025 for Nairobi, Kenya to participate in an international competition.

He will represent Liberia at the Under-21 World Taekwondo Championship, scheduled for December 3–6, 2025.

The young athlete’s quiet but determined demeanor at the airport belied the weight of expectations resting on his shoulders. At just under 21, Swaray has already carved out a name for himself on the national and international taekwondo circuit, emerging as one of Liberia’s most exciting prospects in the sport.

A Rising Star With Global Exposure

Swaray is traveling under the supervision of Coach Paul Dennis, a veteran trainer credited with shaping some of Liberia’s most successful taekwondo practitioners.

Dennis accompanied him earlier this year to the 2025 World Taekwondo Championship in China, where Swaray’s participation was widely regarded as a critical stepping-stone in his competitive development.

Officials of the Liberia Taekwondo Federation (LTF) believe that back-to-back appearances at high-level global competitions have significantly bolstered the young athlete’s readiness for the Nairobi showdown.

“Derrick has grown tremendously,” an LTF executive told FrontPage Africa. “His exposure to elite international athletes and competitive settings has strengthened not just his technique but his mental preparedness. We are confident he will deliver a strong and commendable performance in Kenya.”

A Federation Seeking to Raise Liberia’s Profile

For the LTF, Swaray’s participation represents more than an individual achievement it is part of a deliberate push to expand Liberia’s footprint on the global taekwondo stage. The federation has, in recent years, increased its investment in youth development, capacity building, and international collaboration.

“The continuation of these international engagements shows our commitment to developing young talents and positioning Liberia as a serious competitor,” the federation emphasized.

“Our goal is to inspire more young people to join the sport and to create a sustainable pipeline of skilled athletes.”

Liberia presence at events like the Under-21 World Championship helps raise the nation’s visibility and attract partnerships that are critical for long-term growth.

Swaray’s performance in Nairobi could strengthen interest in Liberia’s taekwondo program and open doors for more athletes seeking international exposure.

Looking Ahead to Nairobi

In Kenya, Swaray will face some of the world’s most promising young taekwondo fighters, many of whom are products of advanced training programs from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Yet his supporters insist that he is not intimidated.

“Derrick has the discipline, the focus, and the courage required at this level,” Coach Dennis said before departure. “Our preparation has been intense, and we are going to Nairobi with determination and confidence.”

The championship, which will bring together dozens of countries, is expected to be highly competitive, with strict qualification requirements and a demanding fight schedule.

For Swaray, however, each match represents an opportunity to test his skills, showcase Liberia’s presence, and possibly bring home a medal.

Gratitude and Support

The Liberia Taekwondo Federation, led by Master Junior Pewee Russian, expressed its profound gratitude to institutions and individuals who have continued to support the sport’s growth. In a statement, the federation applauded the Masters’ Council, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and various sponsors for their steadfast backing.

Master Russian also singled out the Liberia National Olympic Committee, the People’s Republic of China, Lucky Pharmacy, and Go Team Liberia for their continued contributions to athlete development and international participation.

“These partnerships are the backbone of our progress,” Master Russian said. “Without them, our young athletes would not have these opportunities to develop and compete at the highest levels.”

A Nation Watches With Pride

As Swaray begins his journey in Nairobi, Liberians at home and abroad are rallying behind him. His story from a determined child practicing in community gyms to representing Liberia on the world stage has resonated deeply with many young people who see in him a reflection of their own aspirations.

Should Swaray perform well in Kenya, he will not only elevate his personal profile but also strengthen the growing momentum around taekwondo in Liberia.
