Africa-Press – Liberia. The Adjunct Faculty Association at the University of Liberia (AFA-UL) has distanced itself from the planned protest action by the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA).
On Friday, August 29, 2025, ULFA announced an indefinite boycott of all academic activities at the state-run university, following an emergency general assembly held on the Capitol Hill campus.
The association resolved that faculty members would disengage from teaching and other academic activities until the negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is signed by the University of Liberia Administration, the Government of Liberia, and ULFA.
The move, according to ULFA, stemmed from a July 18 General Assembly mandate directing its Executive Committee to engage the university administration and other stakeholders on long-standing concerns over faculty welfare.
However, in a press release issued in Monrovia late Wednesday, AFA-UL said that while it respects ULFA’s position, it believes dialogue remains the best path forward.
In a statement signed by its Assistant Secretary-General, George Tengbeh, and approved by President Wilhelmina Garr Stevens, AFA-UL stressed that it would not support any action that could derail the advancement of higher education, which it described as a national priority.
AFA-UL further explained that ULFA’s decision was reached unilaterally without its input. It added that it “refuses to be used as foot soldiers in a fight that ignores its contribution.”
The adjunct body emphasized its commitment to advocacy that aligns with its vision and objectives, chief among them ensuring that adjuncts are paid on time and in line with their qualifications and experience. It also pledged to promote professional development opportunities and systems that enable qualified adjuncts to transition into full-time faculty positions.
Meanwhile, AFA-UL commended University President Dr. Layli Maparyan for her role in settling arrears owed to faculty and for her willingness to engage with the association when called upon.
The adjunct faculty group also welcomed the support of the Board of Trustees and called on its members to remain committed to their duties while the leadership continues discussions with the university administration to secure equal dignity and respect for all faculty members.
