Teahjay Warns Boakai

Africa-Press – Liberia. Sinoe County former Senator Teahjay, spots delays by President Boakai in effecting policy decisions.
Former Senator of Sinoe County, J. Milton Teahjay, has criticized President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for what he describes as delays in key policy decisions and a lack of focused implementation, despite high expectations set during the 2023 campaign.

Speaking on State Radio ELBC, Teahjay emphasized that while President Boakai had started strong, particularly with promises related to infrastructure such as road construction and procurement of “yellow machines” (heavy equipment), there have been notable delays.

“By now, the issue of the yellow machines should have been behind us,” said Teahjay, referencing the much-anticipated but still-undelivered road equipment that was paraded through Monrovia months ago.

He warned that distractions caused by popular demands and shifting focus are hurting the administration’s ability to follow through on its policy goals.

“The President gets distracted by popular demands. This contributes to delays in the very policy guidelines he set during the campaign,” Teahjay noted on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

The former lawmaker argued that the most impactful legacy Boakai could leave would be through an aggressive road development initiative. If roads are built, from southeast to northwest, he believes the President could practically “forget about campaigning” for reelection, as the achievements would speak for themselves.

While praising the administration’s effort to tackle issues previous governments avoided, such as reducing rice and gas prices, Teahjay acknowledged the economic difficulties Boakai inherited.

“You cannot fix a broken economy in two years,” he said, indirectly referencing the performance of former President George Weah’s administration, which he criticized for lacking tangible results but credited for some inner-city roads.

Turning to governance style, Teahjay noted similarities between Boakai’s approach and that of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, particularly in policy formulation and consultation. He praised Boakai’s attempt to confront deep-seated economic challenges, but warned that execution remains a critical issue.

J. Milton Teahjay (sometimes listed as Juojulue Milton Teahjay) began serving as a Senator for Sinoe County after winning a special election in 2014 on the Unity Party (UP) ticket. He held that position for two consecutive legislative terms, spanning the 53rd and 54th sessions, until his defeat in the 2023 senatorial election by Crayton O. Duncan of the CDC.

His political journey included multiple shifts between parties: initially elected under UP in 2014, he later aligned with the former governing Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). Following his defeat in 2023, he returned to endorse the Unity Party’s presidential candidate, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, describing his support as a notable political shift.
