Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) Chairman Abdullah L. Kamara has been cleared of corruption charges brought against him by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission.

Criminal Court “C” Judge Joe S. Barkon, in a ruling on Thursday, September 4, disconnected and legally cleared the former LTA-Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Tamma Cooperation, Mr. Kamara, of criminal charges brought against him by the LACC, following an audit conducted by the General Auditing Commission (GAC).

Kamara’s legal troubles stem from a sweeping General Auditing Commission (GAC) report and subsequent Grand Jury indictment, which alleged over US$3.5 million in questionable disbursements to TAMMA Corporation and other entities.

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission indicted Mr. Kamara for the crimes of economic sabotage, fraud on Internal Revenue, misuse of public money and records, theft/Illegal disbursement and expenditure of Public Money. Furthermore, based on the indictment, Mr. Kamara and the LACC tussled in criminal Court “C” on theft of Property, Misapplication of Entrusted Property, Criminal Facilitation, Criminal Solicitation, and Criminal Conspiracy.

But, the suspended Acting Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), Mr. Abdullai L. Kamara, filed a formal motion before Criminal Court “C” requesting to be dropped from the high-profile corruption case, arguing he was wrongly identified as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TAMMA Corporation.

In his Motion to Drop Misjoined Party, Kamara’s legal team contends that he relinquished the CEO role more than a year ago, and that current court documents erroneously list him as TAMMA’s executive head. A board resolution dated May 10, 2024, officially named Mr. Fabian Lavelanet as the company’s CEO.

The motion invokes Section 5.56 of Liberia’s Civil Procedure Law, which permits the court to remove a misjoined party at any stage of proceedings if the inclusion was made in error.

Kamara’s lawyers further argue that during the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) investigation, both Kamara and Lavelanet clarified the leadership transition. Lavelanet, now TAMMA’s Executive Officer, reportedly made a voluntary statement confirming his role. Despite these clarifications, the Private Prosecutor allegedly continued to refer to Kamara as TAMMA’s CEO, prompting the motion.

After hearing from both parties, the Resident Judge of Criminal Court “C” ruled that the suspended former Acting Chairperson of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority would be disconnected from the corruption trial.

Judge Joe S. Barkon ruled that Abdullah Kamara should not have been held or named as the corporate officer to represent the Tamma Corporation in an ongoing economic sabotage case involving over US$3 million.

According to the ruling of the Criminal Court “C” Judge, Tamma Corporation, as a dishonorable business venture, has its Chief Executive Officer, including its corporate officers, assent to the right of the corporation.

The court argues that the indictment of Kamara, a former Chief Executive Officer of Tamma Corporation, is improper, unlawful, and untenable, contrary to the provisions of the Association Law cited above and the opinion of the Supreme Court of Liberia.

Following the ruling, the Court in its official court order to Mr. Kamara through its Chief Clerk, Knowles W. Shain, dated Thursday, September 4, 2025, declared that Mr. Kamara has been dropped from all criminal indictments brought against him by the government of Liberia.

” A careful perusal of the Case file in the Case referenced above reveals that the charges levied against Abdullah L. Kamara have been dropped on August 1, 2025, based on a Motion to drop a misjoined party, thereby discharging him from further answering to the said charges and subsequently restoring his Constitutional and Statutory Rights. In essence, Abdullah L. Kamara has no pending criminal action before the First Judicial Circuit, Criminal Court “C”, Montserrado County, Republic of Liberia. The Court ordered.

Based upon the audit report and subsequent indictment, on Monday, June 16, 2025, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., with immediate effect, suspended Mr. Abdullah L. Kamara from his position as Acting Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA).

According to the Executive Mansion, in a press release, the decision follows a report from the General Auditing Commission (GAC) highlighting serious allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement.

The Executive Mansion added that the GAC report linked Mr. Kamara to grave financial irregularities and misconduct during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of TAMMA Corporation, particularly in relation to transactions involving public funds.

In his letter of suspension, the President said, in keeping with the Government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Mr. Kamara is suspended without pay pending the outcome of a full and independent investigation by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).

President Boakai has further directed Mr. Kamara to cooperate fully with the LACC and the Ministry of Justice, and to make himself available to support the ongoing investigation. This action aligns with the Administration’s commitment to upholding integrity in public service and ensuring that those entrusted with public responsibilities are held to the highest standards of accountability.
