Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has urged the public to embrace its Integrated Tax Administration System (Itas), commonly known as Msonkho Online, a platform designed to digitise, automate and improve domestic tax administration and compliance.
The platform, which was first rolled out in 2021 and fully implemented in April this year, offers services such as tax registration, filing returns, and paying taxes, among others.
Speaking during the Msonkho Online Media Training on Monday in Blantyre, MRA official Symon Mkandawire said the system is fully operational but public uptake has been slow.
“We have a system that is working, but adoption is slow, sometimes due to a lack of awareness on how to navigate the platform. That is why we are intensifying awareness, and our call centre is actively providing support to those facing challenges,” Mkandawire said.
He added that system enhancements are ongoing based on public feedback and user experience.
MRA Projects Communication Manager Henry Mchazime called on the media to help raise awareness and promote the use of Msonkho Online.
He stressed that greater public awareness will boost tax compliance, which is crucial for efficient revenue collection to finance national development.
“We encourage those who have faced challenges in meeting their tax obligations to come forward and resolve their tax affairs with MRA so that we can all contribute positively to national development by paying taxes voluntarily,” he added.
He said currently all system modules are operational, including Registration, Returns, Taxpayer Accounting, Revenue Accounting, Taxpayer Services, Debt Management, Objections and Appeals, and Reporting.
Nation Publications Limited Business Analyst Grace Phiri described the training as crucial in equipping journalists to report more effectively on tax issues.
The training is supported by GIZ Malawi under the Strengthening Public Financial and Economic Management – Tikuze Malawi Project.
