Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi women’s football striker Temwa Chawinga continues to hog the limelight as she has been nominated for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
This follows her outstanding performances for National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Kansas City Current last season.
The winner will be announced during a gala ceremony on September 22 in Paris, France.
Temwa is the second Malawian to make the Ballon d’Or list in history after her elder sister Tabitha Chawinga.
But Tabitha has been excluded from this year’s list after a difficult debut campaign with France giants Olympique Lyonnais last season.
In an interview Thursday, Temwa was excited with the nomination. “It feels great to be nominated for the global award. It means a lot to me. I am really humbled and honoured,” she said.
Temwa is one of the two African women’s footballers on the list along with Zambian star Barbara Banda, who plays for US side Orlando Pride.
Some of the top women’s footballers that Temwa will compete against are Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati, Sandy Baltimore, Lucy Bronze, Hannah Hampton (all Chelsea), Ester Gonzalez (Gotham FC), Steteph Catley and Emily Fox (both Arsenal).
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya said the nomination of Temwa was an indication that the game was taking the right direction.
“Temwa is doing well. We, as Fam, are really proud of her,” he said.
Temwa had a good debut season with Kansas as she smashed several records in the US.
She won the golden boot award with 20 goals.
Additionally, she was named the Most Valuable Player.
Last year, Tabitha finished 16 during the awards.
Founders of the award, France Football, will select the best footballers based on performances from August 2024 to July 31, 2025.
