Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, have dropped one place on the Fifa Coca-Cola World Rankings,
The rankings were released Thursday.
The Scorchers are now on position 155 in the world from 154, having accumulated 989.31 points from 988.32 points last month.
Malawi remain 33rd in Africa.
This follows the team’s poor showing in recent matches, having lost four consecutive international friendly matches in April and May this year.
Malawi lost 3-0 and 2-1 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April.
The Scorchers lost 4-2 to Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Ghana’s Black Queens.
Both matches were played in Cansablanca, Morocco, in May this year.
The Scorchers had risen to position 154 on the Fifa rankings in March this year following a 3-2 victory over Zambia in an international friendly match in Lusaka, Zambia, in February.
Malawi lost the first match 2-0 to the Copper Queens.
That was the first time the Scorchers had moved up on the Fifa rankings in 12 months since 2023.
In August 2023, the Scorchers moved to 156 from 159.
Gomezgani ZakazakaFootball Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka admitted that the four losses contributed to the team’s fall on the rankings.
“We are confident that the team will soon improve on the rankings,” he said.
This year, the Scorchers have played six international friendly matches for the first time in the history of the team.
They have lost five matches and registered one win.
Sports analyst Parry Chinyama was optimistic that the Scorchers would move up.
“The team has shown a lot of potential. I am sure that, with proper investment, the team will improve in all aspects,” he said.
The Scorchers will face Angola in the final round of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in October this year.
On the other hand, the Flames are 129 in the world and 37th in Africa.
The women’s teams are ranked according to their value; that is, a measure of their actual strength.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are the top ranked team in Africa.
They have also maintained position 36 in the world.
South Africa, Morocco and Zambia are second, third and fourth, respectively.
Spain reclaimed top spot in the world, moving ahead of previous leaders USA after finishing as runners-up at the Uefa Women’s Euro 2025.
