Africa-Press – Mauritius. A catheterization laboratory with a new angiography machine was inaugurated yesterday at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital (JNH), by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo. The Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Mrs Anishta Babooram, was also present on the occasion.
In his address, Minister Bachoo underlined that the launching of angiography services at JNH marks a new chapter for cardiac care in the South region, also qualifying it as yet another major national milestone in the public health sector.
He pointed out that JNH struggled with a long waiting list of cardiac patients and delays in treatment. According to the Minister, around 6500 angiography interventions are carried out yearly, with 4500 undertaken by the Cardiac Centre. In 2024, 900 cardiac patients of the JNH catchment area necessitated angiography diagnostic.
Mr Bachoo remarked that this new angiography machine will thus significantly strengthen cardiac diagnostic and interventional services at JNH, allowing more patients to be investigated and treated locally. “This will help reduce the long waiting list and improve timely access to life-saving cardiac procedures”, he added, recalling that timely interventions are crucial for cardiac emergencies.
Underpinning the key contribution of health personnel in providing the required treatments and medical services, the Minister renewed Government’s intent to continue to invest massively in equipment and manpower to provide improved health care to the population.
Other key projects in the pipeline include the inauguration of a catheterization laboratory at the Flacq Hospital and a Renal Transplant Centre and Diabetic Centre at the JNH.
