Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Strategic Analysis Centre of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CAE-CPLP) has advocated, in Maputo, “necessary and forceful” action against post-election protests, especially in Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP), arguing that they undermine development.

“This is what happens in practically all African countries [in the] post-election period. It’s already a common occurrence, but necessary and forceful actions are needed to unequivocally relegate these post-election goals, because without such actions, African countries, especially the African CPLP countries [PALOPs], will not be able to find the necessary path to development,” said CAE-CPLP Director João Carlos Pires [Guinea-Bissau]).

The official was speaking in Maputo on the sidelines of the 30th international CAE-CPLP seminar, which discussed “The Influence of the Great Powers in Africa and Its Impacts on the CPLP: An African Perspective”.

Founded in 1996, the CPLP comprises nine countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.

Since the October 2024 elections, Mozambique has experienced a climate of intense social unrest, with demonstrations and strikes called by Venâncio Mondlane, who rejects the election results giving victory to Daniel Chapo. These demonstrations culminated in approximately 400 deaths, according to civil society organizations monitoring events.

The Mozambican government confirmed at least 80 deaths, in addition to the destruction of 1,677 commercial establishments, 177 schools and 23 health units during the demonstrations.

After months of protests, the head of state and Venâncio Mondlane met for the first time on March 23 in Maputo and agreed to attempt to pacify the country. They met on again May 21.
