The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, this Thursday morning had a meeting with Professor Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, an international Catholic-inspired organization with extensive involvement in the areas of peace, solidarity, and social development.

During the meeting at the Presidency of the Republic, the parties discussed topics related to cooperation between the Mozambican state and the Community of Sant’Egidio, highlighting the organization’s role in promoting peace, conflict mediation, and humanitarian support, particularly in contexts of social vulnerability.

President Daniel Chapo praised the historic contribution of the Community of Sant’Egidio to the consolidation of peace in Mozambique, recalling its decisive role in the mediation that resulted in the signing of the 1992 General Peace Agreement. He reiterated the country’s commitment to continuing to promote a culture of peace, reconciliation, and social inclusion, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with organizations committed to universal human values.

For his part, Andrea Riccardi expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing relationship of friendship and cooperation between the Community of Sant’Egidio and Mozambique, reiterating the organization’s willingness to continue supporting social initiatives, particularly assistance to the needy, health promotion, inclusion of the elderly, and access to education.

The audience also had as a backdrop the reaffirmation of Mozambique as an example of peaceful coexistence and interreligious dialogue, being hailed as a positive reference on the African continent.

The Community of Sant’Egidio has been present in Mozambique for over three decades, with initiatives in several provinces, including the “Bravo!” programs for free civil registration, the fight against HIV/AIDS, support for displaced populations, and the promotion of human dignity.

This meeting strengthens the historic bonds of friendship between Mozambique and the Community of Sant’Egidio and consolidates joint efforts to build a more just, supportive and peaceful society.
