Africa-Press – Mozambique. Members of the Mozambican political party Democratic Revolution (RD) – a breakaway from the former rebel movement Renamo – have denied the rumours that party’s leader, Vitano Singano, has been found dead after being kidnapped.
The rumour went viral on social media. RD members and Singano’s wife, Cidália Paulino, say that rumours do not constitute the truth. However, they confirmed that Singano’s whereabouts remain a mystery, after he was kidnapped by persons unknown two weeks ago.
Singano was kidnapped after being released from jail. The Attorney-General’s Office (PGR), through the Central Office for the Fight against Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT), had filed a criminal lawsuit against him for allegedly plotting a coup d’etat.
“I don’t know why this information is circulating on social media. So far we don’t know Vitano’s whereabouts but we’re doing everything we can to get clues. If it was true, I, as his wife and family, would have had the information first hand”, said Singano’s wife, cited by the daily independent paper “O País”.
For his part, RD spokesperson, Santismo Januário, has accused the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) of kidnapping Singano.
“From the information we have, Singano was kidnapped by SERNIC members. When he was kidnapped, he managed to throw away one of his cell phones. We had this information from someone who accompanied the case. The same person called his wife and me to give us the information”, the spokesperson said.
He explained that Singano’s kidnapping is known to the police authorities and the PGR, which have so far provided no clues as to his whereabouts.
“We are waiting for the justice bodies to make a statement, just as they did the other time, when, even without an arrest warrant, Singano was taken to jail. Since it was the same modus operandus, we hope that he is in police custody”, he said.
