Africa-Press – Mozambique. Activist and politician Joel Amaral, better known as MC Trufafa, was this Thursday discharged from Quelimane Central Hospital, where he was admitted after surviving an attack that almost took his life.
In his first public statements since the attack, Amaral criticized the lack of democracy in Mozambique.
“Democracy is still far away for Mozambique”, he said, pointing out that the systematic persecution of members of the opposition is transforming the political environment into a veritable field of intimidation.
The attack on his life occurred on Palm Sunday, as Joel Amaral was on a bicycle taxi in Quelimane. Joel Amaral was shott and afterwards rescued and rushed to hospital by locals.

The crime shocked civil society and sparked outrage among activists and politicians, who see this episode as yet another reflection of the country’s growing political intolerance.
Still visibly shaken and emotionally fragile, Amaral said that his security is a concern.
“I am not safe at this moment, because… I am living in a place known to family only… Precisely because it is not safe,” he said.
While still in hospital, Amaral revealed today, unknown individuals tried to approach him claiming to be his family, in suspicious behaviour that only worsened his feeling of vulnerability.
“I didn’t even feel safe in the hospital,” he lamented, adding that he still cannot move freely around the city of Quelimane “because there are still serious risks”.
