Agblevor given three-month leave after mother’s death

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Police FC will until early May be without their star striker Peter Agblevor after granting him permission to attend the burial of his deceased mother among other necessary cultural rites performed in his native county.

The Ghanaian attacker has not played for Police FC since their 2-1 defeat to Rayon Sports on February 11. He lost his mother on January 18 and, according to his Ghanaian tribe (Ewe) culture, he will have to stay out of job to perform the first traditional right until the body of his mother is buried in late April.

Burial and funeral rights in Ghana depend on the culture and tribe from which the deceased person hails. Some corpses in Ghana may even take as long as a year in the mortuary pending burial especially when the person is from a royal family.

Moreover, most Ghanaian tribes believe there is life after death. Hence, the deceased must be given a befitting burial so that he or she goes to the ‘next world’ peacefully. All this involves adequate planning, leaving bodies to spend months in the mortuary.

Reports indicated that Agblevor was not playing due an injury until the prolific attacker dismissed the rumors.

“I am not injured; Police FC have given me some time off. Hopefully, I will be back in first week of May,” Agblevor told Times Sport.

“My mother passed away and, as the firstborn, my Ghanaian tribe (Ewe) culture does not allow me to do any job until she is buried. There are some traditions our tribe elders will do for me.”

The funeral of Agblevor’s mother is scheduled for April 24-27.

“So, when I return from the funeral I can resume training and play for my team, possibly in the first week of May,” he added.

Agblevor has scored 13 goals so far this season with 10 of them coming in the Primus National League. He joined Police FC in the January transfer window for a reported fee of Rwf20 million.

The 20-year-old striker guided Police FC to the 2024 Heroes Cup glory after scoring a brace in the team’s 2-1 win over APR in the final held on February 1.
