Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Mining Company Limited is facing heightened pressure from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament over unpaid license fees totaling US$500,000.
.The inquiry, led by Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, was held as part of an oversight session aimed at addressing outstanding financial obligations under Section 8 of the Finance Acts of 2000 and 2022.
According to official data, the company has only remitted $50,000 as of March 14, leaving a balance of $450,000 yet to be settled. Hon. Conteh stressed the urgency of timely payments, noting that such revenues are vital for national income and the effective delivery of public services. He warned that continued default could trigger severe measures such as suspension of business activities and legal action, including liens on the company’s bank accounts.
“We’re not here to threaten anyone,” Hon. Conteh stated. “This is about meaningful dialogue. But it’s imperative for companies to realize that unpaid funds due to the National Revenue Authority (NRA) directly impact the state, and we are obligated to pursue recovery.”
In response, Sierra Mining’s new leadership, under the direction of Managing Director Mr. James John, acknowledged the debt and pledged to pay the remaining $450,000 by May 31. Hon. Conteh accepted the proposed deadline but clarified that it would be considered final. “We understand the company is undergoing internal restructuring,” he said. “However, failure to meet this timeline will compel us to recommend the suspension of operations and explore legal avenues.”
The Committee further emphasized its dedication to transparency, affirming that companies fulfilling their fiscal responsibilities would be publicly recognized. This measure aims to create an equitable narrative, especially for firms listed on stock markets.
PAC has vowed to ensure strict compliance with financial obligations, warning that any further noncompliance or payment delays will result in firm parliamentary intervention.
