Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, under the theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.”
The event took place at the National Scout Association multi-purpose Hall in New England Ville, Freetown, and featured a keynote address by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq.
In his address, Minister Lengor emphasized the importance of collaboration in the fight against drug abuse, stating, “This commemoration is a day set aside to strengthen actions and cooperation in achieving a World Free of drugs.”
He expressed gratitude to NDLEA and its partners for their ongoing efforts and highlighted the NDLEA Strategic Master Plan as a crucial framework for addressing substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Sierra Leone.
Minister Lengor described drug addiction as a “complex and chronic condition” that leads to emotional turmoil, strained relationships, and financial hardships.
He urged young people to pursue their dreams and avoid drugs, particularly referencing “kush,” a term for cannabis. “Please do not kill or destroy that beautiful dream of yours with drugs,” he cautioned.
The Executive Director of NDLEA, Mr. Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, reinforced the need for a collective response to combat drug abuse. He remarked, “Enforcement alone is not enough; arrest and prosecutions may address symptoms but do not cure the disease. The chains of addiction can only be broken through a holistic approach.” Mr. Kaikai called on communities, families, and educators to unite in the fight against drug abuse, emphasizing that government efforts alone are insufficient.
United Nations Resident Coordinator, Madam Seraphine Wakana, also spoke at the event, highlighting that drug abuse is not only a criminal justice issue but a public health emergency and a developmental challenge. “The economic and social drug-related crimes and addiction hinder sustainability,” she stated.
She further commended the Sierra Leonean government for declaring a national emergency regarding drug abuse, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to support the government’s initiatives.
The event concluded with remarks from various speakers who reiterated the importance of awareness, sensitization, and enforcement in mitigating the risks posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
