Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation has officially launched Sierra Leone’s first National Data Strategy, in partnership with the Data Governance in Africa Initiative, under the Digital for Development (D4D) Hub.
This landmark move positions Sierra Leone as the second country in West Africa—after The Gambia—to advance from digital policy frameworks to concrete national action.
The two-day launch event at the Radisson Blu Hotel brought together senior leaders from ministries, departments, and agencies. Day One focused on high-level training in data governance principles, frameworks, and operational models, fostering a unified national approach.
Day Two was dedicated to the technical validation of the draft strategy, ensuring it reflects Sierra Leone’s priorities, strengthens public service delivery, boosts transparency, and aligns with African Union and ECOWAS digital transformation goals.
Built on the Digital Development Policy (2023–2029) and to be complemented by the upcoming Digital Government Bill, the strategy rests on three core commitments: treating data as a public asset, promoting equity and citizen empowerment, and aligning with continental and regional digital agendas.
The Data Governance in Africa Initiative is implemented by GIZ African Union in partnership with the African Union, AUDA-NEPAD, and the Digital Impact Alliance, and co-funded by the European Union and BMZ.
