Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Julius Maada Bio, has called for enhanced collaboration between ECOWAS and the AES countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The appeal was made during a courtesy visit from Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at the Sierra Leone States House.

In his address, President Bio stressed the importance of building robust partnerships with the AES nations. He remarked, “It is imperative that we build a stronger relationship between ECOWAS and the AES nations and harness this partnership for the advancement of our Community.”

He affirmed that such relationships are vital for promoting trade, facilitating free movement, and ensuring peace and security in the region.

President Bio also reaffirmed his support for democratic transitions and electoral processes in the subregion, pointing to the ongoing transition in Guinea and the forthcoming elections in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau.

He further proposed the convening of a Special Summit to discuss the future of the West African region and the ECOWAS Community, marking 50 years of cooperation and integration.

Touray provided President Bio with a comprehensive update on the ECOWAS Community’s current status, acknowledging the significant challenges faced by member states.

He expressed his commitment to working closely with President Bio to promote regional unity and assured him that an assessment mission would soon be deployed to Sierra Leone and Guinea to address the Yenga border dispute.
