Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Citizens in Sierra Leone have expressed widespread frustration and disillusionment with the country’s two major political parties, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the All People’s Congress (APC).
The slogan “No food, no water, no progress” has become a rallying cry for many who feel that decades of political promises have gone unfulfilled.
According to market women, community leaders, and civil society advocates, the persistent lack of basic necessities such as food and clean drinking water has led to a growing sense of desperation and anger among citizens.
Despite alternating leadership between the SLPP and APC, the citizens lamented that the country continues to grapple with pervasive poverty, high unemployment, and crumbling infrastructure.
Fatmata Koroma, a market woman in Bo, summed up the sentiment of many citizens when she said, “Whether it’s APC or SLPP, our situation never improves.” Civil society advocate Abdulai Conteh noted that this moment transcends party politics; it is about survival.
To what they described as rising cost of living, ongoing challenges in accessing clean water and reliable electricity, and unfulfilled promises of both major political parties, have led many to call for a new political direction, one that prioritizes the welfare of the people above all else.
As the country looks toward upcoming elections, the demand for real leadership beyond the APC and SLPP is gaining momentum. Citizens are demanding leaders who can deliver tangible change rather than empty campaign slogans.
The message from the people is deemed, clear: “No food, no water, no progress.” They however expressed hope, as they look forward to see whether the political class will heed the call for change and prioritize their needs.
